Infinite Jest

BPDV loaned me Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. I’ve only read 6 pages which took me about 1 hour. The last 5 of those in 15 minutes which leaves 45 for the first page. Not that the first page is more dificult but the flow wasn’t set yet.

Like when starting Dave Eggers A Staggering work… I learnt new english words because especially on the first page I want to pay respect to the writer who probarly took ages to construct the first page and I therefore wanted to understand everything. Most books allow the reader to relax after a couple of pages. Infinite Jest is not one of those books, you must stay concentrated all thousand pages of it (so I’ve been told). It’s like starting a new blackbook/workbook in highschool. I would write all excersizes with monk-like precision, like typ-ex wasn’t invented in 1990. After about 1,5 pages I would write like my chaotic self again. I guess I will have to discipline myself to do so a whole book. Why? Because I’ve seen all movies on youtube and all instant coolness has been consumed and I must go on to stuff which might take more time. Maybe I am not ready yet because I still think classical music shouldn’t take half an hour but 5 minutes like all other songs in the top 40.

This is an interview with Wallace with his usual headband which is not there to look cool but to keep away the sweat dripping from his head from being nervous.
